Print, DPI and En-Print Competition: Results Judge: Don Mitchell
Print of the Year: Johnnie Yates
Apparatus: Nikon D80
18-135 soon lens
Inspiration: I tried to capture the fun that this young couple were having on a day when the rest of us were being soaked during a torrential rainstorm. They were inside huge transparent balloons, floating on an inflatable swimming pool. The objective was to propel the balloons around the pool and force each other out of the arena. I chose a high shutter speed to freeze the action and focused hard on the girl’s face in order to get it as sharp as possible. Shooting at 8 fps, in continuous mode, gave me many images to choose from and having this image printed professionally achieved the super high gloss finish that it deserved.
Manipulation As this image was first submitted in the 'Non-Computer Enhanced' competition this shot is just as it left the camera.

Exposure Compensation +1/3
ISO Speed 200
Focal Length 40.0mm

Inspiration: I was stunned and somewhat amazed when my picture was chosen as the winner of the DPI. It was un-posed and taken on the spur of the moment with no time to set up the camera other than grab it, set to multi-shoot and try to catch the moment. I thought it was a great capture of a particular moment in time, and somewhat quirky and worth entering. It was not my first choice and is technically not a very good picture. I feel somewhat embarrassed by winning with a fluke picture against so many superb entries. Obviously it being different appealed to the Judge on the night.
It was taken early in the morning with a low March morning sun throwing the silhouette squarely onto the bedroom sun-blinds. The sunlight was very bright with much red content which darkened the surrounding edges of the picture and seems to have bleach out the seen picture. A suitable filter and time to get properly set would have been really useful. Perhaps I will get another chance next early year to get another shot at it.
Main shooting data, any advice on better settings would be appreciated.
