Winning Image:
'Marrakech Mayhem'
by Trevor
Staff

Picture
AIMS
Apparatus: Nikon D700
  • Tamron 28-300 lens set at 28mm
  • ISO 3200
  • F 11
  • Shutter speed 8 secs
Inspiration:
I was fascinated by the activity in the Jemaa el Fna (main square) in Marrakech and wanted to capture the mood and atmosphere. I put the camera on the floor and set the shutter to 8 seconds to get the movement of the people.

Manipulation:
Converted to black and white and added a sepia tone in iPhoto. Removed LOTS of dust specks we had just spent a week in the Sahara, just a bit of sand you understand!

Highly Commended

2nd Place:
'Ken'
by Johnnie Yates

Picture
IMS
Apparatus: Nikon D80
  • 18-200 lens set to 80mm
  • f11
  • 125th/sec
  • 300 watt strobes provided the key and fill lights with another equipped with barn doors to highlight the back of the head and separate the model from the background.
Inspiration:
Ken was my mentor when learning to play the acoustic guitar and I persuaded him to pose for what was originally intended to be a "Wanted Poster".  Ken, bless him, is a very nice guy and I just couldn't manage to achieve the grumpy look I was after.  (Ken just doesn't do grumpy!)   However, the resulting image was good enough to use as a straight portrait. (I am still looking for a bearded grumpy person for my wanted poster image.)

Manipulation:
I used a mask to separate Ken from the background and then performed a levels adjustment to achieve an even, pure black finish.  I then inverted the mask and over sharpened Ken's portrait to emphasise the whiskers and bring about a more "gritty" appearance.

3rd Place:
'Warrior Queen'
by Andy Worsfold

Picture
AIMS
Apparatus: Olympus EM5 ii
  • Panasonic/Leica 42.2mm lens (eq 85mm)
  • Aperture 1.2
  • Shutter 125th/sec
  • ISO 200
Inspiration:
Taken whilst attending a weekends themed Photoshoot.

Manipulation:
Cloned out a few distracting branches in the background and applied a smart contrast filter to really bring out the detail. All processing done on my iPad.
