3rd PDI Competition
15th April 2013

1st Place: Andy Worsfold
Winter Vivaldi

Picture

AIMS

Apparatus:
Landscape shot: Canon powershot s100
  • Aperture f2
  • ISO 100
Violin shot: Canon 7d with 50mm lens
  • Aperture f16
  • ISO 100

Inspiration. A fantastic violin solo of the Winter movement (from the Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi) performed by the University of Chichester orchestra. I knew I wanted to do something different and so when the snow came it seemed the time had come. The landscape of the cloisters at the university was shot with my then little 'point and shoot' which I carry at all times.  I borrowed a violin and photographed it at home with the camera mounted on a tripod allowing me to use a narrow aperture to ensure a deep depth of field.

Manipulation:
I combined the two images in an app on my ipad called paint fx (somewhat cheaper than photoshop!! ) and hey presto my first ever win!!! The boy done good!!

2nd Place: Chris Haines
Balance

Picture

AIMS

Apparatus: Camera t.b.a.

  • Aperture f8
  • Aperture priority
  • ISO 800
  • Shutter speed 1/1000th sec

Inspiration: The picture was taken at the Arundel Wetlands and I had to watch the sea gulls for quite a while since they were hovering round this pole and it was quite difficult to catch them at the right time. However I was able to capture 2 good shots and balancing was one of them.

Manipulation: t.b.a.

3rd Place: Andy Worsfold
Clown Portrait

Picture

AIMS

Apparatus: Canon 7d with 100mm macro lens

  • Aperture F4
  • ISO 200
  • Shutter speed 1/1000th sec

Inspiration: This shot was one of many ( watch out for future competitions!!) I took at this years clowns convention. I chose to use my macro lens as it doubles up as a very good portrait lens being sharp and allowing you to separate your subjects from often cluttered backgrounds.  I followed the procession around the streets diving in and out firing off shots whilst bumping into various members from various clubs along the way!!!

Manipulation: Not a great deal of manipulation other than a tight crop to remove background distraction and some sharpening.  I achieve around 80% of my image manipulation using an iPAD application called Photogene.  While I also use Photoshop Elements, I prefer the tactile finger tip control possible with my iPAD.
