2nd Digital Projected Image Competition: Results
Judge: Mike Constable

1st: Alan Fitzgerald

Picture
Egret at Pagham

AIMS

Apparatus: Nikon D300
  • ISO 400
  • Aperture priority
  • f13
  • 1/1000 Sec
  • 150-500 Sigma lens @ 400mm

Inspiration:

I was out walking early one evening at Pagham and spotted a very shy Egret.  Having tried several times to sneak up on it for a shot, to no avail, I just sat for few minutes and it seemed to forget about me.  With just 5-minutes to spare it suddenly came within range and struck this elegant pose.

Manipulation:
The evening light was perfect so this image required little more than some minimal cropping.

2nd: Trevor Staff

Picture
Big sky, little house

AIMS

Apparatus: Nikon D700
  • ISO 200
  • Aperture priority
  • RAW
  • f22
  • 1/50 Sec
  • 28mm lens

Inspiration:

This beautiful salt water lagoon is adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea on the South East coast of Spain.  The light reflects perfectly off the calm waters and the colours, largely influenced by salt-tolerant algae on the shore and in the shallow water, add vibrant contrast to the sky.  The house was formerly used by the fishermen who use a unique fishing technique to capture shoals entering through a narrow link to the Med.  The visible poles in the water are part of this fishing system.

Manipulation:

This image is uncropped and only required a small adjustment to saturation and contrast from the RAW.  I needed to do some spot removal (dust) and have since cleaned my lens and sensor - carefully!

Storm brewing

AIMS

Apparatus:Nikon DD700
  • ISO 200
  • Manual programme
  • RAW
  • f22
  • 1 Sec
  • 28-300mm @ 32mm
  • Neutral density filters

Inspiration:

Having just purchased a set of Neutral Density filters, I decided to try some slow shutter speed techniques I had read about to see if I could capture unique lighting and texture on the beach.  I plan was to get a 'milky' sea and correct exposure for the sky.  This was the best of around 10 pictures taken at different shutter speeds and I was quite for this first attempt.

Manipulation:

As this was more of a 'creative' project I adjusted the exposure of the first groyne using Camera Raw 6.0 which has a selective adjustment brush.  The saturation was also tweaked, but most of the effect is from the filter technique.

En-Print Competition:
4th Heat

Lyn Phillips and David Middleton had their En-Prints selected by Judge Mike Constable, these prints will go through to the final competition in 2012.  Sorry, but you will have to wait until the Enprint Competition before you see these again.
