Winning Image:
'Pedro' by Johnnie Yate

Picture
AIMS

Apparatus:
  • 18-200 mm lens at 50 mm
  • Aperture f11
  • ISO 100
  • Shutter speed 1/125th sec.
  • RAW
  • Three 300-watt strobes.  One set at full power - high and left with a soft box (f8).  A second light set at eye level and to the right of the model. - set at ½ power with soft box (f5.6).  Third used as a spot light behind the model to separate him from the background (f5.6).

Inspiration:
The Objective was to produce a portrait of a local councillor who had just completed a starring role in an amateur production in Worthing.  The beard had been grown specially for the part and was due to be shaved off the after the final performance.

Manipulation:
Strong manipulation was needed to produce the gritty result I was looking for.  The chosen image was converted using Adobe Camera Raw and over sharpened to increase the impact of the scruffy beard.  The clarity slider was pushed to 100% to further emphasize the whiskers.  Colour balance was adjusted to give the model a more tanned and Mexican appearance.

2nd Place:
'Locks of Love' by Lyn Phillips

Picture
AIMS

Apparatus: Canon G12
  • f 8
  • ISO 100
  • 1/320th sec
  • RAW
Inspiration:
A trip to New York on a cold, windy, November day, what else to do other than cross over to Brooklyn and view Manhattan across the water. There were lovely walks along the riverbank with the railings festooned with the 'lovers' locks'. This particular railing had the word 'beautiful' at the top which inspired this shot.

Manipulation: Created two layers - the top layer was converted to black and white and then the eraser tool used to 'cut through' to the colours of the locks beneath.

3rd Place:
'Under the Arches' by Neil Treloar

Picture
AIMS

Apparatus: Canon 5D Mk2
  • Sigma lens 150-500
  • f 8
  • ISO 400
  • 1/125th sec.
Inspiration:
This image was taken at the old dockyard in Portsmouth. I wanted to try and get some shapes or shadows into an otherwise a very plain wall.
To do this I set up an off camera flash to the left of the model aimed at the wall and using an old
leaf I found fired the flash through and it gave these shadows. I think it worked quite well after a lot of adjustment.
